Namchil Decocted Pill

Namchiljeon-won

한글 남칠전원  ·  Pinyin Lan Qi Jian Yuan

藍漆煎元

藍漆, the chief drug at twice the weight of the others, is not among the registered medicinals and is left out of the ingredient list. It is a Korean domestic drug name, which is why the citation is to the Hyangyak Jipseongbang rather than to a Chinese formulary.

Translation

Treats phlegm cough. Namchil, 2 nyang; ginseng, apricot kernel and walnut flesh, 1 nyang each. Grind to a powder and make honey pills the size of a bullet; one pill at a time, chewed down with ginger decoction or rice water. — Hyangyak Jipseongbang 鄕集 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of the few formulas in the chapter taken from a Korean source, and the only one in the phlegm-cough group whose chief drug is a Korean domestic name. The other three are the standard moistening trio for a dry chronic cough — ginseng, apricot kernel and walnut — made into a honey bolus to be chewed, which is the form the chapter keeps for coughs treated over months. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
