Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治胃脘癰及肚癰ㆍ內疽神效. 當歸身ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ甘草節ㆍ黃芪ㆍ射干ㆍ連翹ㆍ白芷ㆍ貝母ㆍ陳皮ㆍ皂角刺ㆍ天花粉ㆍ穿山甲ㆍ金銀花ㆍ木香ㆍ靑皮ㆍ乳香ㆍ沒藥各五分, 大黃(酒製) 一錢半. 右剉, 作一貼, 酒水相半煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats abscess of the stomach cavity, abscess of the belly and internal induration, with marvellous effect. Body of Korean angelica, white peony, licorice node, astragalus, belamcanda, forsythia, angelica dahurica, fritillaria, tangerine peel, gleditsia thorn, trichosanthes root, pangolin scale, honeysuckle, saussurea, green tangerine peel, frankincense and myrrh, 5 fun each; wine-processed rhubarb, 1 don 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct in half wine and half water and take. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

沃雪 is to pour water on snow — the name claims the swelling will melt away without being cut. Under that claim is a careful double formula: Korean angelica, white peony, astragalus and the licorice node supplement and hold, which is the 托裏 half, while honeysuckle, forsythia, gleditsia thorn, pangolin scale, frankincense, myrrh and wine-processed rhubarb break the collection up and lead it out, which is the 瀉 half. Half wine and half water as the decoction liquid is there to carry the drugs deep. It is the Uigam's answer for a suppuration too deep to lance, and the Bogam lists it for 內疽 alongside the aperture-opening methods of the chapter. The categories it names — 胃脘癰, 肚癰, 內疽 — cannot be matched to modern diagnoses, and the honest statement is that the Bogam is describing deep suppuration it could not see. **Contains pangolin scale, a CITES-protected material that must not be used.
