Immortal's Formula Restore Life Drink

Seonbanghwalmyeong-eum

한글 선방활명음  ·  Pinyin Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin

仙方活命飮

The leaf's own heading writes 癰 where the surrounding text writes 癕; both are printed 癰 here. 為 is given as 爲 and 鐡 as 鐵, and the interlinear note on the pangolin is given in parentheses. 皂角刺 is registered under 皂角 and 甘草節 has its own entry; 當歸尾 is registered under 當歸, with the part named in the prep. The leaf carries no source label before the ○ clause, so the closing 《入門》 governs the whole.

Translation

Treats every kind of abscess, deep-rooted sore and toxic swelling: where it has not yet formed it disperses it inwardly, and where it has already formed it opens at once. It is the sage drug for expelling pus, stopping pain and dispersing toxin. Rhubarb, 5 don; honeysuckle, 3 don; the tails of Korean angelica, gleditsia thorn and aged tangerine peel, 1 don 5 fun each; frankincense, fritillaria, trichosanthes root powder, angelica dahurica, red peony and licorice node, 1 don each; saposhnikovia, 7 fun; myrrh, 5 fun; pangolin scale, three pieces (burnt and ground separately). Cut the above, make one packet, put it with good wine into an earthen jar, seal the mouth and decoct until done, and drink it according to whether the sore is high or low on the body. After taking it drink two or three more cups of wine, lie on the side and sleep. Avoid sour things and iron vessels. If the sore is on the back, gleditsia thorn is the chief drug; on the belly, angelica dahurica is the chief; on the four limbs, honeysuckle is the chief. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The best-known formula in the chapter and the one the method leaf names, with Naesohwangryeon-tang, for an inward pattern that should be dredged and conducted — 內證宜疏導 — with Cheongyeolsodok-eum for the lighter case. Against that stands the surface-dispersing pair, Hwangryeonsodok-san and Naetakganghwal-tang, and behind both stands the chapter's governing division: the 托裏 and 內托 formulas, which supplement a spent body with ginseng, astragalus and Korean angelica so the pus is thrust outward, against the 疏 and 利 formulas, which carry the toxin downward out of a repleted one. This leaf has rhubarb at 5 don, the largest single weight in the group, and no ginseng or astragalus at all, so it belongs squarely on the draining side even though its claim is 排膿, expelling pus. Two things make it distinctive. The first is the preparation: no water at all, only good wine in a sealed earthen jar, with more wine after the dose, the patient lying on the side to sleep, and iron vessels forbidden. The second is the instruction that the chief drug changes with the site — gleditsia thorn when the sore is on the back, angelica dahurica on the belly, honeysuckle on the limbs — which is a rare piece of explicit prescription-building in the Bogam, and it tells us the author thought of the formula as a frame rather than a fixed list. **Contains pangolin scale, which comes from an animal protected under CITES with all commercial trade prohibited.** The formula cannot be prepared as written. Honeysuckle, forsythia-class heat drugs, frankincense and myrrh carry the plausible part of it, but the claim that a drink opens an abscess does not survive contact with the clinic: a collection of pus is drained, and a spreading cellulitis is treated with antibiotics. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
