Translation

Treats a labour in which bearing down has been carried too far, the qi declined and the pulse faint, the spirit clouded and dizzy, the jaw clenched and the face green, with loss of awareness. Costus, medicated leaven, tangerine peel, barley sprout, astragalus, ass-hide glue and white peony 1 don each; ramie root and licorice 3 don each; glutinous rice 1 hop. Add 3 slices of ginger, decoct and take; taking it in succession is best, or prise the mouth open and pour it in. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

用力太過 — bearing down carried too far — names a cause the other formulas in this section do not treat. Everything else at 1.22 is for an obstruction; this is for the mother herself giving out. Ramie root and licorice at three don against one for everything else is the proportion that marks it. Ramie root is cooling and stanching and is the chapter's usual medicinal for heat disturbing a pregnancy; here it is given in quantity to a woman who has overheated with effort. **Collapse in the second stage of labour is an obstetric emergency. Pouring liquid into the mouth of an unconscious woman causes aspiration.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
