Translation

Treats bitter pain in flank and ribs. Akebia, green tangerine peel and toosendan 6 don 5 pun each, fried yellow together with 2 don 5 pun of croton flesh, which is then discarded; radish seed (stir-fried) and fennel (stir-fried) 5 don each; curcuma, costus and talc 2 don 5 pun each. Powder them and take 3 don stirred into a thick decoction of scallion white — it heals at once. Of all the qi pains, only bladder qi pain under the flank is hardest to treat, and this medicine alone can remove it. A man had pain in the neck sinews that physicians long failed to cure; it then flowed into the back and lumbar muscles, and after a time settled in the right flank with cramping pain and great suffering. He took this medicine and mended at a single dose. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Hyeop)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The croton is fried with three medicinals and then thrown away — the pharmacy's method for lending a violent drug's force without giving the drug. The case that follows is a pain that travelled from the neck to the back to the flank over months, which reads like a nerve root rather than a bladder. **Croton is highly toxic even as a frying agent; it is discarded and must not be swallowed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
