Rhubarb, 1.5 don; white peony, mirabilite and coptis, 1 don 2 fun each; magnolia bark and areca, 1 don each; tangkuei tails and red poria, 8 fun each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Rhubarb and mirabilite together — the full purgative pair — at the onset of a dysentery with fever and vomiting. That is the chapter's most aggressive early intervention and it follows the rule the section defends: clear what is lodged before anything else, because binding a dysentery at the start seals the heat in. The reasoning is consistent even where the practice would now be thought reckless in a febrile patient already losing fluid. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
