Translation

Treats red and white dysentery of pus and blood with abdominal pain, inner urgency and dragging-down behind, stopping it at a single dose. Coptis, 4 nyang, mixed with water and 2 nyang of evodia and stir-fried with it, the evodia then discarded; bran-stir-fried bitter orange, 2 nyang. Powder, and take 3 don each time on an empty stomach sent down with yellow wine. This treats a dysentery of heat accumulation and qi stagnation: coptis clears the heat and bitter orange breaks the qi. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs in the finished powder with the Uigam's own explanation attached — coptis clears the heat, bitter orange breaks the qi — which is exactly the two-part reading of tenesmus the chapter uses throughout. It sits in the section on the essentials of treating dysentery, where the Bogam gathers the formulas it considers most reliable, and a single dose stopping it is the claim that earned it the name. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
