Donguibogam

Translation

Treats abscesses, sinus abscesses and boils whose pus and fluid will not stop after bursting, where the flesh neither grows nor draws in. Costus root, areca seed and coptis, in equal parts. Grind fine, stir into fresh water and paint it on; where the sore is wet, dust it on dry. It is suited above all to the heat sores of rich living. ○ An alternative formula adds red lead. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs, used either wet or dry depending on how much the sore is running — painted on with plain fresh water when it is drying, dusted on as a powder when it is weeping. That is a sensible rule for a dressing and it is the most practical sentence in this group of leaves. 膏粱熱瘡, the heat sores of those who eat fat and fine grain, is the chapter picking out a class of patient rather than a lesion: the well-fed, whose wounds fester and will not close. That observation has outlived its explanation — a chronic non-healing wound in someone who eats richly and is not thin is now most often looked at as a problem of blood sugar and perfusion. The chapter had the association without the mechanism. **The alternative form adds red lead, which is lead tetroxide and is absorbed from a raw wound surface. That form must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
