Clinical commentary 臨床

保命散 with the mirabilite and the goose dung taken away: two drugs, dusted dry on the mouth and tongue rather than painted on in a paste. The reduction is an improvement on both counts — nothing faecal, and nothing wet — and what is left is an astringent and a mercury salt. For the condition, see `bomyeong-san`: this is thrush in a newborn, and the modern treatment is an antifungal, with the real risk being a baby that stops feeding. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, applied to the oral mucosa of a newborn who will swallow it, with no dose given by weight. Mercury has no safe intake at any age, and in an infant the developing nervous system is the organ injured and the injury is permanent. This must not be prepared or given.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
