Translation

Treats deafness and ringing in the ears. Forty-nine castor beans with the husks removed and the flesh of ten jujubes, pounded together with human milk until even; take a piece the size of a jujube stone each time, wrap it in cotton wool and plug it into the ear, until warmth is felt, changed once a day. It is called Jojajeong. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** The castor seed contains ricin, one of the most toxic substances in the materia medica, and forty-nine beans pounded into a paste is a lethal quantity by mouth. Nothing should be put into an ear in any case: a perforated drum lets a preparation reach the middle ear, where it is ototoxic and the damage is permanent. 覺熱爲度, until warmth is felt, is the irritant effect taken as the endpoint, which is what the whole family of ear plugs in that chapter relies on. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
