Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治虛腫. 先用此以透關絡, 然後審證療之. 木香ㆍ藿香ㆍ川芎ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ檳榔ㆍ枳殼ㆍ甘草各三錢, 沈香ㆍ丁香各二錢, 乳香一錢半, 麝香一字. 右爲麄末, 每三錢, 入薑三片, 紫蘇五葉煎服, 空心. 《直指》

Translation

Treats vacuity swelling. Use this first to penetrate the passes and network vessels, and afterwards examine the pattern and treat it. Costus, agastache, chuanxiong, red poria, areca, bitter orange and licorice 3 don each; aloeswood and clove 2 don each; frankincense 1.5 don; musk one ja. Grind to a coarse powder and take 3 don at a time, decocted with 3 slices of ginger and 5 perilla leaves, on an empty stomach. — Injae Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The instruction is more interesting than the formula: use this first to open the way, then look at the pattern and treat it. It is a preparatory prescription, not a treatment — six aromatics given to make the channels passable before anything is decided. That sequencing appears nowhere else in this chapter and is worth noting as a clinical stance.
