Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治能遠視不能近視. 熟地黃ㆍ天門冬各四兩, 枳殼ㆍ甘菊各二兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心茶淸下百丸. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats being able to see far but not near. Prepared rehmannia and asparagus 4 nyang each; bitter orange and chrysanthemum 2 nyang each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take a hundred on an empty stomach with clear tea. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four medicinals for presbyopia, and the chapter's reasoning on it is sharp: one who can see far but not near has blood insufficient and qi in excess, so the blood is filled. The complaint is refractive and nothing swallowed corrects it, but the observation that it comes with age and goes with the blood is the same one that makes reading glasses a mark of the forties. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
