Translation

The classic says: prolonged looking damages the blood, and the blood is governed by the liver, so the liver is damaged and the eyes dim. When the liver is damaged, wind heat arises of itself; one should boost the blood and settle the liver, and the eyes brighten of themselves. Prepared rehmannia 1 nyang 5 don; coptis and cassia seed 1 nyang each; saposhnikovia, chrysanthemum, notopterygium, cinnamon heart, water-levigated cinnabar and myrrh 5 don each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with boiled water. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The argument in the citation is the chapter's account of eye strain and it holds up: prolonged close looking consumes the blood, the liver is what stores it, and the dimming follows. The formula fills the blood and settles the liver; the cinnabar is why it cannot be made as written, and leaving it out costs the formula nothing. **Contains cinnabar, a mercury sulphide. Prepare without it.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
