Donguibogam

Translation

Whenever there is damage from some food, with aversion to cold and fever and glomus pain of the heart and abdomen that does not resolve for a long while, one must ask what food it was that first caused the damage; then take that very food, burn it preserving its nature, grind it fine, and make 1 nyang of powder. Separately take a handful of fresh garlic chives, pound out the juice, and give the powder stirred into it. After an hour or two, urge it on with a purging medicine — Boiled Yellow Pill or Prepare for Urgency Pill — and the retained food comes down at once, the fever abates, and the patient recovers. It is also called Soown-san. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Naesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

必詢問其先食何物所傷 — one must ask what food it was that first caused the damage — makes the history-taking part of the prescription. The medicine cannot be made without the answer. Burning the offending food and giving it back is the like-cures-like reasoning at its most literal, and the Jaundice chapter uses the same logic at 5.11 with the craved substance. The Cold Damage chapter's entry for food-relapse fever gives the identical method. 燒存性, burning while preserving the nature, means charring black without reducing to ash. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
