Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

Translation

Treats retching counterflow and nausea after birth, with inability to eat or drink. Red peony, pinellia, lycopus leaf, ginseng, and tangerine peel, 1.5 don each; licorice 5 fun. Cut the above, make one packet, add 7 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Jesaeng 濟生 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five herbs at one flat dose, and the presence of lycopus is what marks it as a postpartum formula rather than a general anti-emetic — the tradition reading nausea after birth as partly a matter of blood that has not moved on. Pinellia and tangerine peel settle the stomach; ginseng supplies what the birth spent; seven slices of ginger carry it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
