靜神丹

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered and bound with pig's heart blood into pills the size of millet grains, coated with gold leaf; 50 pills with a rush-pith decoction. Note on modern practice: cinnabar is a mercury sulfide and gold leaf is not used in contemporary practice; ox bezoar is now supplied as cultured or synthetic material. Modern preparations omit these, and the herbal core carries the indication.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治憂愁思慮傷心, 令人惕然心跳動, 驚悸不安. 當歸身(酒洗)ㆍ生乾地黃(酒洗)ㆍ遠志(薑製)ㆍ茯神各五錢, 石菖蒲ㆍ黃連各二錢半, 辰砂二錢, 牛黃一錢, 金箔十五片. 右爲末, 猪心血和丸黍米大, 金箔爲衣, 燈心煎湯下五十丸.

Translation

Treats worry, sorrow, and brooding damaging the Heart, leaving a person with the heart leaping in a start, palpitations, and unease. Wine-washed angelica body, wine-washed dried raw rehmannia, ginger-processed polygala, and hostwood poria, 5 don each; acorus and coptis, 2.5 don each; cinnabar 2 don; ox bezoar 1 don; gold leaf 15 leaves. Powder the above and bind with pig's heart blood into pills the size of millet grains, coated with gold leaf; take 50 pills with a rush-pith decoction. — Donguibogam · Sin

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula's binder is its signature — pig's heart blood, on the sympathetic reasoning that a Heart short of Blood should be given a heart's blood. What survives the modern subtractions is a well-made small formula: angelica and rehmannia rebuilding, polygala and hostwood poria settling, and a measure of coptis to take down the fire that a long-worried heart generates. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
