Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治水腫, 腹脹, 小便赤, 大便滑泄. 滑石三兩, 白朮ㆍ葶藶子ㆍ猪苓ㆍ赤茯苓各一兩, 木香ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ木通ㆍ桂皮ㆍ甘草各五錢. 右爲末, 白湯調下三錢. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats water swelling with abdominal distension, red urine and slippery diarrhoea. Talc 3 nyang; white atractylodes, lepidium seed, polyporus and red poria 1 nyang each; costus, alisma, akebia, cinnamon bark and licorice 5 don each. Powder them and take 3 don stirred into plain hot water. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Oryeong-san extended, with talc at three nyang taking the lead. The indication pairs oedema with diarrhoea, which looks contradictory — why drain a patient who is already losing fluid? The classical answer is that the water is in the wrong place: it floods the flesh while the intestines pass what should have gone out as urine.
