定風餠子

Registered with the chapter suffix to distinguish it from the 定風餠子 of the Deughyobang transmitted elsewhere in the book, whose composition includes typhonium. The 風病須防再發 heading it sits under concerns the prevention of recurrence.

Translation

Treats wind stroke with a deviated face, nasal discharge, phlegm reversal headache, dizziness and vomiting. Gastrodia, aconite kusnezoffii, arisaema, pinellia, white ginger, chuanxiong, poria and licorice, all raw, in equal parts, powdered, bound with ginger juice into pills the size of euryale seeds and pressed into little cakes, coated with cinnabar; chew one finely and send it down with ginger decoction. It forestalls a relapse of wind disease and brightens the spirit and mind. — Boje Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Raw aconite kusnezoffii and raw arisaema chewed as a cake, under a cinnabar coating, taken prophylactically over long periods — the preventive indication is what makes this one worse than the emergency formulas, because the exposure is repeated. Setting that aside, the composition is a recognizable phlegm-and-wind set and the symptom cluster it names — headache, dizziness, vomiting, with a history of stroke — is a real one. The claim to brighten the spirit and mind belongs to the elixir register. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
