Translation

Treats the seven mountings in men and conglomerations with vaginal discharge in women. Korean angelica, aconite accessory root (blast-fried), toosendan flesh and fennel 1 nyang each. Cut them up, boil in three seung of good wine until the wine is gone, and dry over a low fire into a fine powder. To each nyang of this powder add clove and saussurea 2 don each, thirteen whole scorpions and corydalis 1 nyang. Powder all together, mix evenly with the first powder, bind with a wine-and-flour paste into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take a hundred on an empty stomach with wine. Mounting qi and vaginal discharge both belong to wind, and whole scorpion is the sage medicinal for wind; toosendan and fennel both enter the small intestine channel; Korean angelica and corydalis harmonize the blood and stop pain. Mounting qi and discharge both come of cold evil accumulating in the small intestine, so aconite is used to assist, and clove and saussurea serve as guides. There was a man who had suffered mounting pain for three years and was well after three courses of this. — (Donguibogam · Jeoneum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one entry in the chapter that explains itself drug by drug, and the explanation is the reason to read it: wind is named as the shared cause of mounting and discharge, which is why a scorpion heads a formula that otherwise looks like a warm qi-mover. The two-stage preparation — four medicinals boiled dry in wine, then four more added to the powder — keeps the aromatics from being cooked away. **Contains aconite accessory root, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
