Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治老人脾腎虛泄瀉. 吳茱萸不以多少, 鹽水浸透, 獖猪藏頭一截, 去脂膜, 洗淨, 入茱萸於藏中, 兩頭扎定, 蒸爛, 擣千杵, 丸如梧子大, 米飮下五十丸. 煖膀胱, 固大腸, 進飮食, 淸水道. 《入門》

Translation

Treats spleen and kidney vacuity diarrhoea in the old. Evodia, any quantity, steeped through in salt water; one length of the fore part of a gelded boar's large intestine, the fat and membrane removed and washed clean. Put the evodia inside the intestine, tie both ends, steam it soft, and pound it a thousand strokes; form pills the size of a paulownia seed and take fifty in rice water. It warms the bladder, secures the large intestine, advances the appetite and clears the water way. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Organ therapy in its plainest form: the drug is cooked inside a pig's large intestine and the whole thing pounded into pills, on the principle that like treats like and the bowel should be treated with bowel. The evodia is the same single drug the Deukhyo gave alone for spleen diarrhoea; here it is given with a large quantity of connective tissue and fat, which for a wasted old patient is not nothing. The thousand strokes of pounding is the Immun's way of saying that the preparation must be worked until it is truly homogeneous. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
