Pestle Chaff Pill

Jeogang-hwan

한글 저강환  ·  Pinyin Chu Kang Wan

杵糠丸

Two of the materials have no entry of their own in the herb list — ox cud-grass (牛轉草) and the drool from a cow's mouth (牛涎) — and so are not in the ingredient list above; 杵頭糠 is entered as 糠 with its preparation named. The alternative name 奪命丸 given by the Jeongjeon is not the 奪命丸 of the Women's chapter, which is a different formula.

Translation

Treats the five diaphragm blocks. Chaff from the head of a pestle and ox cud-grass, half a geun each; glutinous rice, one geun, powdered. Take the drool from the mouth of a yellow cow, work it with 3 nyang of sugar into pills the size of a euryale seed, put them in a pan and boil them through over a slow fire, and let the patient eat them twice a day. Also called Talmyeong-hwan, the Snatch Back Life Pill. — Uihak Immun 入門 · Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Rice, chaff and sugar boiled into a sweet dumpling and eaten twice a day. Like Palseon-go it is a feeding measure dressed as a prescription: what a patient with a narrowed gullet can get down is something soft, sweet and slippery, and the chaff supplies bulk the rice alone would not. **The ox drool is not something to reproduce.** The grain and sugar are the active part of it in any sense that matters. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
