Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治不渴而小便閉. 黃栢ㆍ知母(幷酒洗焙) 各一兩, 肉桂 半錢. 右爲末, 水丸梧子大, 空心白湯下百丸. 《東垣》 一名泄腎丸. ○一人病小便不通, 腹脹, 脚腫, 雙睛凸出, 晝夜不眠, 苦痛不可言, 且苦嘔噦, 衆醫無效. 東垣曰, 膀胱者, 津液之府, 氣化則能出矣. 小便癃閉, 是無陰而陽氣不化者也. 此人奉養太厚, 膏粱積熱, 故膀胱者腎之府, 久而乾涸, 小便不化. 今內關外格之病悉具, 死在朝夕. 但治下焦, 其疾自愈. 遂處此方, 服之須臾, 尿出如涌泉, 卽差.

Translation

Treats blocked urination without thirst. Phellodendron and anemarrhena (both wine-washed and baked) 1 nyang each; cinnamon half a don. Powder them, make water pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take a hundred on an empty stomach with plain hot water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Sobyeon) Also called Drain the Kidney Pill. A man could not pass urine; his belly was distended, his legs swollen, both eyes bulging; he did not sleep day or night, the pain was beyond words, and he suffered retching besides; many physicians had failed. Dongwon said: the bladder is the bowel of fluids, and only when the qi transforms can it discharge. Retention of urine means there is no yin and the yang qi does not transform. This man has lived too richly, and rich food has accumulated heat; so the bladder, the kidney's bowel, has long been dried out and the urine does not transform. Now the disease of inner block and outer repulsion is complete, and death is a matter of morning or evening; but treat the lower burner and the disease will heal of itself. So he wrote this formula, and a moment after taking it the urine poured out like a gushing spring, and he mended.
