Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸般耳聾, 補虛開竅, 行鬱散風去濕. 磁石三兩(煆), 再用葱白ㆍ木通各三兩剉, 同水煮一伏時, 取石硏水飛二兩. 川芎ㆍ白朮ㆍ川椒ㆍ棗肉ㆍ防風ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ細辛ㆍ山藥ㆍ遠志ㆍ川烏ㆍ木香ㆍ當歸ㆍ鹿茸ㆍ兎絲子ㆍ黃芪各一兩, 肉桂六錢半, 熟地黃二兩, 石菖蒲一兩半. 右爲末, 羊腎兩對酒煮爛, 和酒糊和丸梧子大, 空心溫酒或鹽湯下五十丸. 《入門》

Translation

Treats deafness of every kind: supplements vacuity, opens the orifice, moves depression, scatters wind and removes damp. Loadstone 3 nyang calcined, then boiled a full watch with 3 nyang each of cut scallion white and akebia; take the stone, grind and water-float it to 2 nyang. Chuanxiong, white atractylodes, Sichuan pepper, jujube flesh, saposhnikovia, white poria, asarum, dioscorea, polygala, aconite main root, costus, angelica, deer antler velvet, cuscuta and astragalus 1 nyang each; cinnamon 6 don 5 pun; cooked rehmannia 2 nyang; acorus 1 nyang 5 don. Powder them; boil two pairs of sheep's kidneys soft in wine, and with wine paste bind into pills the size of a firmiana seed; take fifty on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt decoction. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

4.5.2 gives the reasoning: all deafness is phlegm and fire bound up, and without loadstone to weigh it down and aconite, cinnamon, pepper, asarum and acorus to scatter and move, there is no way the old phlegm and pent fire will open.
