Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治感風寒咳嗽ㆍ喘急ㆍ痰壅ㆍ鼻塞. 麻黃二錢, 貝母ㆍ杏仁各一錢半, 人參ㆍ甘草各一錢, 桔梗ㆍ阿膠各五分, 橘紅二分半. 右剉, 作一貼, 入紫蘇葉二片, 同煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats contraction of wind cold with cough, hurried panting, congesting phlegm and a blocked nose. Ephedra, 2 don; fritillary and apricot kernel, 1 don 5 fun each; ginseng and licorice, 1 don each; platycodon and donkey-hide gelatin, 5 fun each; red tangerine peel, 2 fun 5 ri. Cut up, make one packet, add two perilla leaves, and decoct together. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ephedra and apricot kernel for the wheeze, with ginseng and gelatin to keep the opening from emptying the patient — the compromise the 風寒喘 section keeps making, between driving the cold out and holding the lung together. 潤肺, moistening the lung, in the name points at the gelatin and fritillary rather than at the ephedra. **Ephedra is a sympathomimetic and is contraindicated in hypertension and heart disease.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
