Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺感寒邪ㆍ喘急, 亦治咳嗽. 鸎粟殼(蜜炒) 二錢, 五味子一錢半, 麻黃ㆍ人參ㆍ半夏麴ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ甘草各一錢, 桑白皮五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the lung's contraction of a cold evil with hurried panting, and treats cough as well. Honey-fried poppy capsule, 2 don; schisandra, 1 don 5 fun; ephedra, ginseng, pinellia leaven, donkey-hide gelatin beads and licorice, 1 don each; mulberry root bark, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, and decoct. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Poppy capsule at twice the weight of anything else, with ephedra beneath it: a formula that suppresses the cough and opens the airway at the same time. It is the most direct of the 風寒喘 formulas and the one whose action a modern reader can name — an opiate antitussive with a bronchodilator. **Contains poppy capsule, an opium material and a controlled substance; opiates depress respiration and are dangerous in a wheezing patient.
