Translation

Treats vacuity malaria with clouding and exhaustion, copious sweating, abundant phlegm, an enlarged tongue and halting speech, and a vacuous, forceless pulse. White poria, ginseng, white atractylodes, Korean angelica, raw rehmannia, parched sour jujube seed, ophiopogon, anemarrhena, aged tangerine peel and white peony, 1 don each; licorice, 3 fun. Cut them up, make one packet, add two jujubes and one mume plum, decoct in water, then stir in bamboo sap and ginger juice and take. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A qi and blood tonic with a phlegm-heat drug poured in at the end. The base is the Sagunja-tang four with the Samul-tang blood drugs standing in for cinnabar-free sedation — angelica, raw rehmannia and white peony — and ophiopogon, anemarrhena and sour jujube seed on top of them for the heat that has dried the patient out. Bamboo sap and ginger juice go in after straining, not into the pot, which is how the Hoechun handles a sap that will not survive boiling. 舌大語澁 with 昏倦 is the detail that makes this leaf worth reading: an enlarged tongue, speech that will not come, clouding and heavy sweating in someone who has been febrile a long while. That is a patient who is dehydrated and delirious, and the formula's instinct — put fluid and substance back — is the right one, even if what such a patient needs is rehydration and treatment of the infection. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
