Virgate Wormwood Pill

Injin-hwan

한글 인진환  ·  Pinyin Yin Chen Wan

茵蔯丸

A cross-reference leaf: the composition is not given here but in the Jaundice chapter, where the formula is printed as 瘴疸丸 and registered as jangdan-hwan. The Jaundice leaf adds that the Deukhyo's Chija-won is the same preparation and is what is now called 茵蔯丸, so the three names stand for one pill. No ingredients are entered on this entry.

Translation

Treats the epidemic of the season, and miasmic malaria, jaundice and warm-heat disease. It is simply the Jaundice chapter's Jangdan-hwan. Five pills each time, swallowed down in warm water. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a formula of its own. The leaf gives the indication — the epidemic of the season, with miasmic malaria, jaundice and warm-heat disease — and then says in six characters that it is the Jaundice chapter's Jangdan-hwan, setting the dose at five pills swallowed down in warm water. The cross-reference matters for how the chapter reads the illness. Jangdan-hwan is dosed to vomiting and purging and is indexed in the Jaundice chapter against the swift jaundice that the compiler says kills fastest of all. Bringing it in here means he saw jaundice appearing in an epidemic and jaundice appearing in malaria as one and the same emergency, and he was not wrong about that: acute viral hepatitis and falciparum malaria both present this way. **Jangdan-hwan contains croton frost and dichroa, both toxic, and dichroa causes severe vomiting. It must not be prepared. Acute jaundice with fever is a medical emergency.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
