Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治胞衣不下. 鬼臼黃色者, 硏如粉, 不用羅過, 以手指撚之, 每服二錢, 溫酒一盞, 同煎至八分服之, 立生如神. 此方救人幾萬數. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the placenta not coming down. Dysosma of the yellow kind, ground to a powder — not sifted through a sieve but rubbed between the fingers; take 2 don at a dose, decocted with 1 jan of warm wine down to eight parts and taken, and the birth comes at once as though by spirit. This formula has saved people by the tens of thousands. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

不用羅過, 以手指撚之 — not sifted through a sieve but rubbed between the fingers — is a processing instruction of a kind the Bogam gives rarely, and it keeps the powder coarse. What is avoided is a fine dust that would be inhaled or lost. 此方救人幾萬數, saved people by the tens of thousands, is the strongest claim in the chapter. **Dysosma contains podophyllotoxin and is severely toxic; it causes vomiting, neuropathy and bone marrow suppression, and deaths are recorded.
