Boost the Yellow Powder (Dongwon's astragalus version)

Ikhwang-san

한글 익황산  ·  Pinyin Yi Huang San

益黃散

The transcription writes 盖, which the corpus prints rather than normalizing to 蓋. 生甘草 and 灸甘草 are entered as a single licorice row at the combined weight with the preparation in the prep field, which is how the corpus already handles that pair. The alternative name 黃芪益黃散 romanises to an id that is not occupied. 涼驚丸, named here as contraindicated, is not registered and is left plain text; it belongs to section 1.29 and to a sibling batch.

Translation

Treats chronic fright wind. Astragalus 2 don, ginseng and tangerine peel 1 don each, white peony 7 fun, raw licorice and mix-fried licorice 5 fun each, white poria 4 fun, coptis 2 fun. Make a coarse powder, decoct in water and take it little and often. ○ Also called Astragalus Boost the Yellow Powder. In any frightened child passing green stool, Cool the Fright Pill is strictly forbidden. For when wood of the liver flourishes it must overwhelm earth of the spleen, so one should first make the earth substantial and only afterwards drain the wood. One should supplement the source of earth through the heart channel with what is sweet and warm, and further drain fire within spleen earth; supplement metal with what is sweet and cold, and with what is sour and cool make metal flourish and fire wane within spleen earth, and then wood of the liver is of itself depleted. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Astragalus leading, with ginseng, tangerine peel, licorice both raw and mix-fried, a little poria, white peony and a token two fun of coptis. Dongwon's reasoning is set out at length in the leaf itself and it is the Five Phase argument in its clearest form: liver wood is overwhelming spleen earth, so do not attack the wood first — make the earth solid, then drain. The green stool is read as the colour of the liver showing through. This is a different prescription from the 益黃散 already registered under that name. That one — tangerine peel, green tangerine peel, chebula flesh, mix-fried licorice and clove — is Qian Yi's original, a warming aromatic for a cold spleen with abdominal pain and diarrhoea, and the chapter is careful to distinguish it: this leaf's alternative name is 黃芪益黃散, the astragalus version, and it is Dongwon's reworking. Read against the child in front of them, it is a qi-supplementing decoction given little and often to a depleted infant. Nothing in it is toxic, and that is worth noting in a section where most answers are not. Nothing in it stops a convulsion either, and the real problem is the fluid and electrolyte loss driving the convulsion; see the note on `baekchul-san-soa` for what would actually have helped. The clinical instruction 時時服, take it little and often, is at least the right way to give fluid to a vomiting child. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
