Two Hwal Powder

Ihwal-san

한글 이활산  ·  Pinyin Er Huo San

二活散

蒼耳, the cocklebur decocted as the vehicle, resolves to the 蒼耳子 entry, which carries the plant's other parts as variants; no weight is given for it and none is entered. 甘草節 is the licorice node and is registered under its own id. 蟬蛻 is registered under 蟬退 and 乾葛 under 葛根. 荊 is printed as the transcription has it. The leaf carries no interlinear notes.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one formula in the 疔疽 run with no poisons in it. Seventeen drugs, headed by the two Hwal the name counts — notopterygium and pubescent angelica root — with Danggui, lindera root, red peony root and honeysuckle flower beside them at 2 don, then safflower, sappanwood, schizonepeta, cicada slough and dried pueraria root, and a don of sandalwood to close. The design is a surface-opening formula crossed with a blood-moving one: the two Hwal and the schizonepeta and pueraria push outward, the safflower and sappanwood move the blood through the swelling, and the honeysuckle, forsythia and trichosanthes root do the cooling. It is prescribed as the last of four steps. 疔疽治法 reads 急用飛龍奪命丹或雄黃丸下之去其毒熱, 次服化毒丸及二活散 — purge first, then 化毒丸 and this. Where the mineral formulas are for the acute crisis, this is for the resolution of what is left, and a cocklebur decoction as the vehicle keeps the surface-releasing intent. Of everything the chapter offers for 疔, this is the leaf a modern reader can take most at face value. None of it treats a bacterial infection, but nothing in it will poison the patient either, and the ingredients are ones still in ordinary clinical use. Cocklebur fruit is the one drug to handle with care — the seedlings and seeds are hepatotoxic in quantity. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
