Hyeollyeong-san

한글 현령산  ·  Pinyin Xuan Ling San

玄靈散

繭, the silkworm cocoon, is registered as jamgyeon; the leaf gives seven of them, burnt to ash. The transcription writes the siegesbeckia with 𦻎 for 豨, kept as transcribed; the herb dictionary heads it 豨薟草. The source is printed 《活心》, which is how this transcription gives it; the label is rare in the corpus and may stand for 活人心.

Translation

Treats the five eruptions of abscess, boils and swellings of every kind, the fish-navel malign sore, and swelling toxin. Siegesbeckia 1 nyang; seven silkworm cocoons, burnt to ash; frankincense 2 don. Powder the above and take 2 don each time, stirred into good hot wine; take three packets one after another, and a sweat coming is the sign that it has worked. — Hwalsim 活心 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three ingredients, one of which is an ash. Siegesbeckia carries the formula — it is the chapter's wind-damp and sore drug, used at a full nyang — frankincense moves blood and is the standard addition wherever a swelling is painful, and the cocoon ash is the kind of calcined animal material the tradition reached for when a sore needed sealing. 得汗爲效, a sweat as the sign of success, puts this among the exterior-releasing treatments of the chapter rather than the draining ones: the hot wine is part of the method, not just a vehicle, and the three packets are meant to be taken in quick succession until the sweat comes. 魚臍惡瘡, the fish-navel sore, is the one named lesion worth picturing — a sore with a sunken dark centre and a raised rim, which is how an eschar or a necrotic ulcer looks. The honest reading is that a sweat is not evidence that an abscess has been dealt with, and three doses of anything in hot wine will raise one. A boil with spreading redness, fever or a necrotic centre needs to be looked at. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
