Frankincense and Fish Glue Decoction

Hyangpyo-tang

한글 향표탕  ·  Pinyin Xiang Biao Tang

香鰾湯

The sesame seed is named only as what the fish glue is fried with and carries no weight of its own, so it is recorded in the fish glue's prep rather than as a separate row. 薑ㆍ葱 各五 gives no unit; the corpus reads ginger in slices and scallion in stalks. The section index at 025a lists this group of formulas under the name 通仙五寶丹 where the leaf heads itself 通聖五寶丹 — see that entry.

Translation

Treats aching of the sinews and bones from the toxin of plum-blossom sores. Madder root, ephedra, lindera, fine tea, pagoda-tree flower (stir-fried) and Sichuan pepper, 5 don each; fish glue 3 don, fried together with sesame seed until it beads; frankincense 1 don. Cut up and divide into two packets; to each packet add five slices of ginger and five stalks of scallion, decoct in water and take. Two or three packets and it is cured. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Named for its two odd drugs: frankincense and fish glue, the dried swim bladder, fried with sesame seed until it puffs into beads. Fish glue is collagen, and the book uses it where something has to be knitted back together — it appears in the tetanus formulas of the wind chapter in the same way. Around it sit madder root and frankincense to move the blood, pagoda-tree flower to cool it, and ephedra, lindera, Sichuan pepper, ginger and scallion to open the surface and warm the channels so the pain lets go. The complaint is real and specific: the deep, boring, night-worse bone pain of secondary and tertiary syphilis, which comes from periostitis. A warming, blood-moving decoction might blunt that pain for an evening. The promise of cure in two or three packets is the Hoechun's habitual confidence and should not be believed. **Ephedra (麻黃) raises blood pressure and heart rate and is unsafe in heart disease, hypertension and thyroid disease; it is a controlled substance in many jurisdictions.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
