Clinical commentary 臨床

The name is the claim: the bones are to be exchanged for new ones. Four nyang of smilax and an nyang and a half of soap-bean thorn lead, with trichosanthes root and tangkuei to moisten and move, schizonepeta and ephedra to open the surface, gardenia and forsythia to drain heat, and a small weight of frankincense and myrrh to move the blood in the deep tissue. Dividing it into ten packets and boiling three bowls down to one makes a concentrated dose drunk in two halves — a form that suits a long course of bone pain. Set beside 香鰾湯 and 茯苓湯, which treat the same complaint from the same section, this is the version that leans on smilax and the cooling drugs rather than on warmth. The pain is periosteal and the formula is not treating its cause. **Ephedra (麻黃) raises blood pressure and heart rate and is unsafe in heart disease, hypertension and thyroid disease; it is a controlled substance in many jurisdictions.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
