Translation

Treats lockjaw with the jaw clenched and the body rigid. Fish glue, calcined with the nature fully retained, and a little musk. Make a fine powder; 2 don each time, taken with hot wine or rice water as preferred. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two ingredients and neither weighed, which marks it as a folk preparation taken up into a formulary. Fish glue — isinglass, the dried swim bladder — appears repeatedly in the lockjaw section, and the reason is probably sympathetic: it is the substance that binds and sets, and the disease is one of rigidity. Musk is CITES-listed and unavailable, and in any case carries the whole supposed action of the formula. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
