Return to the Origin Elixir
Hwanwon-dan
한글 환원단 · Pinyin Huan Yuan Dan
The base is beef, prepared at length: yellow ox meat in any quantity, sinew and membrane removed and cut into pieces the size of go stones, washed repeatedly in river water and steeped overnight, then washed again until the water runs clear; sealed in a porcelain crock with good wine under oiled paper and cooked over a mulberry-wood fire for a full day and night; taken out, baked dry, and powdered — **the color should be that of yellow sand; if it has scorched black it must not be used.** To every half geun of the meat powder, one geun of the herbs above is added. Steamed jujube flesh ground to a paste, with good wine, binds the pills; 50–70 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine, three times daily at first and once daily later. **The source insists: do not bind these with a wheat paste or rice water — the medicine loses its efficacy.**

Translation
Treats internal damage with vacuity detriment; quiets the five viscera, disperses the hundred illnesses, fills the essence-marrow, secures the origin Qi, and is greatly able to make the thin stout. Yellow ox meat, in any quantity: remove sinew and membrane, cut into pieces the size of go stones, wash several times in river water, steep overnight, and wash again until the water runs clear. Put it with good wine into a porcelain crock, seal the mouth with oiled paper, and cook over a mulberry-wood fire for a full day and night; take it out, bake dry, and powder it — its color should be that of yellow sand, which is best; if scorched black it must not be used. To every half geun of the meat powder, add 1 geun of the following: lotus seed flesh and dioscorea (both fried with scallion and salt, the scallion and salt then discarded), white poria, and lightly dry-fried fennel, powdered, 4 nyang each. Mix evenly; grind steamed jujube flesh to a paste, add good wine, work in the powders, and pound into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; dry in the sun. Take 50–70 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine — three times daily at first, and later only once. In compounding, do not use wheat paste or rice water and the like: the medicine loses its efficacy. — Hwarinsim 活人心 (Donguibogam · Naesang)
