Treats heat phlegm with cough. Coptis and evodia, 1 don 5 fun each; tangerine peel, 5 don; pinellia, 1 nyang 5 don. Grind to a powder, make pills the size of a mung bean with a ginger juice paste, and swallow a hundred pills down with ginger decoction. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Coptis with evodia in equal weight is the Jwageum pair, the tradition's combination for sour regurgitation, and its presence here says what kind of cough Dansim had in mind: one driven from the stomach rather than from the lung. The bulk of the formula is pinellia and tangerine peel — the Ijin-tang skeleton — so what the pill does is dry the phlegm while cooling the stomach beneath it. Cough caused by reflux is a modern commonplace, and a formula that pairs an antiemetic combination with a phlegm-drying one is a reasonable answer to it. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
