Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治心肺間熱. 麥門冬一兩, 黃連五錢, 鼠尾黃芩三錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸菉豆大, 溫水下二三十丸. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats heat between the heart and lung. Ophiopogon 1 nyang, coptis 5 don, rat-tail scutellaria 3 don. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a mung bean, and take twenty or thirty down with warm water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals, and ophiopogon at twice the coptis is what makes it a diaphragm formula rather than a purely draining one. Heat between heart and lung dries before it burns, and moistening comes first. The Uterus chapter's Hwangryeoncheonghwa-hwan at 13.24.11 pairs coptis with evodia at forty to one; here the counterweight is a moistening medicinal instead of a warm one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
