Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治中焦熱, 淸上實下. 桔梗ㆍ黃芩ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ川芎ㆍ梔子ㆍ當歸ㆍ羌活ㆍ白朮各一錢, 知母ㆍ薄荷ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 煎水, 調蜜一匙服. 《奇效》

Translation

Treats heat of the middle burner; it clears above and makes the lower solid. Platycodon, scutellaria, red poria, chuanxiong, gardenia, angelica, notopterygium and white atractylodes 1 don each; anemarrhena, mint and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water, stir in a spoonful of honey and take. — Gihyobang 奇效 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

旣濟 is the Yi's hexagram of completion, fire below and water above, and the name states what the formula is for: heat that has risen and left the lower body empty. 淸上實下 — clearing above and making the lower solid — is why white atractylodes and poria sit in a cold formula.
