Translation

Treats jaundice with heat pent up and both passages bound and rough. Rhubarb (vinegar-fried), scutellaria, coptis and licorice 1 nyang each. Grind to a fine powder and take 2 don stirred into warm water, three times a day. First use Melon Stalk Powder blown into the nose to bring down the yellow water, and afterwards take this medicine. Externally, pound fresh ginger and virgate wormwood together to a pulp and rub it over the whole body. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A three-part regimen rather than a single prescription: powder blown into the nose first, this decoction after, and a ginger-and-wormwood rub over the whole body. The nasal insufflation has its own section at 5.9, where the yellow water drawn from the nose is taken as the sign of effect. The composition is Samhwang-tang — the three yellows — with licorice. Rhubarb vinegar-fried is softened, which suits a jaundice being treated over days rather than purged at once. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
