Clinical commentary 臨床

Eleven drugs in equal parts, ground and taken three don at a time in warm wine, three times a day. The frame is a Qi-and-Blood supplement — astragalus and angelica at the head, cnidium and red peony to move — with dipsacus and deer antler velvet added because the chapter reads a penetrating wound as broken sinew and bone, and dried ginger with blast-fried aconite to hold a patient who is cold and shutting down. Scutellaria is the one cooling drug, against the heat the wound will raise. The indication is the most extreme in the chapter: 刀鎗傷腹裂腸出 — a knife or spear wound with the belly split and the bowel out. Nothing taken by mouth reaches that patient. Evisceration needs the abdomen opened in an operating theatre, the bowel inspected and repaired, contamination washed out, fluid and blood replaced, and antibiotics; and until then the bowel is covered with a moist dressing and not pushed back. A powder in wine, three times a day, describes a death. What the formula could plausibly do is nothing for the wound and something for the survivor afterwards, when the bleeding has stopped and the problem is weakness. **Contains aconite, which is toxic. This must not be prepared.** Deer antler velvet is a protected-animal material. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
