Transform the Toxin Powder

Hwadok-san

한글 화독산  ·  Pinyin Hua Du San

化毒散

Each drug carries its own interlinear gloss. The transcription encloses four of them in the double-angle marks (解熱毒, 解毒, 去虫, 破血) but prints 去風 bare after 白殭蠶 三錢; it is the same kind of gloss and is set as one here. The transcription writes 觧 for 解 and 蚕 for 蠶; the standard forms are printed.

Translation

Treats the severe case of plum-blossom sores. Raw rhubarb 1 nyang — it resolves the heat toxin —, pangolin scale 5 don — it resolves the toxin —, silkworm 3 don — it dispels wind —, one centipede — it drives out the worms —, and the tails of tangkuei 5 don — they break the blood. Grind to powder and take 2 don at a time, stirred into warm wine, twice a day. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs, each labelled with the job it is there to do, which makes this leaf a small lesson in how the compiler read a formula: rhubarb for the heat toxin, pangolin scale to resolve toxin, silkworm for wind, centipede for worms, tangkuei tails to break the blood. The whole of it is driven down with warm wine, which was expected to carry the drugs into the blood and the sinews where the sores were thought to sit. The "severe case" is secondary syphilis with a heavy eruption. Raw rhubarb at 1 nyang in a powder is a strong purgative and would certainly have produced an effect; none of it touches the infection. **Contains centipede (蜈蚣), which is toxic.** **Pangolin scale (穿山甲) is from a CITES Appendix I animal; its trade is illegal and it must not be obtained.** Its keratin has no activity that the formula depends on. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
