Translation

Treats yang toxin, warm toxin and heat toxin erupting as macules. This is Insam-baekho-tang. (Its formula is given in the Cold chapter.) — Donguibogam · Pi

Clinical commentary 臨床

One line, and the whole of it is a renaming: for macules from heat toxin, give White Tiger with ginseng. The name is the indication — 化癍, transform the macules — and it records a habit of this pharmacy, which is to name a formula after the thing it is pointed at rather than after what is in it. The choice is sound on its own terms. A macular eruption with great heat and thirst is read as heat at the qi level that has broken out into the skin, and gypsum with anemarrhena is the tradition's answer to that; the ginseng is added because the patient who reaches this stage has usually been sweating and is running dry.
