Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治室女經水初下, 一時驚悸, 或感風冷, 以致經水止, 而卽患帶下. 琥珀ㆍ木香ㆍ當歸ㆍ沒藥各四錢, 乳香一錢, 麝香ㆍ朱砂各二分半. 右爲末, 水丸芡實大, 每一丸, 溫酒磨服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats a maiden whose menses have just begun, who at that moment is startled into palpitation, or contracts wind cold, so that the menses stop and discharge follows at once. Amber, costus, angelica and myrrh 4 don each; frankincense 1 don; musk and cinnabar 2.5 pun each. Powder them, make water pills the size of a euryale seed, and take one at a time ground into warm wine. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most specific indication in the chapter: a girl whose first period has just started and who is frightened at that moment, so that the flow stops. The chapter treats it as its own condition, and the formula is built accordingly — amber and cinnabar quiet the startled spirit while myrrh, frankincense and angelica move the blood that stopped. That a single frightening moment at menarche could set a lasting pattern is an observation about the body's response to shock, and it is recorded here without embellishment. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercury sulfide and toxic; and musk, CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade.
