Amber Plaster

Hobak-go

한글 호박고  ·  Pinyin Hu Po Gao

琥珀膏

A homonym, not the registered 琥珀膏. The existing `hobak-go` is the three-drug 積聚門 plaster of 大黃ㆍ朴硝ㆍ大蒜 from the Dansim, which despite its name contains no amber; this leaf is a twelve-drug Gukbang lead plaster that does contain amber, so it takes the chapter tail. 桂心 is entered as the cinnamon bark entry and 木鼈子 as 木鼈子.

Translation

Amber 1 nyang; clove and costus 7 don 5 fun each; akebia, cinnamon heartwood, Korean angelica, angelica dahurica, siler, pine resin, cinnabar and momordica seed 5 don each; sesame oil 1 geun. Set aside the amber, clove, costus, cinnamon heartwood and cinnabar to be powdered; cut up all the rest and steep them in the oil for three nights, then heat over a slow fire with stirring until the angelica dahurica scorches to a yellow brown, and strain them out. Next put in the pine resin and let it melt, filter off the dregs, boil again, and put down 1 geun of lead tetroxide; stir with a willow spatula without letting the hand rest until it turns black and a drop into water forms a bead. Then stir in the five powders, amber and the rest, mix evenly, and when it sets make it into cakes and keep them for use. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A full lead plaster, and the one place in the Bogam where a formula called Amber Plaster actually contains amber. The method is the standard one — a three-night steep, a slow render with angelica dahurica as the doneness indicator, pine resin for body, then lead tetroxide stirred in until the mass blackens and passes the drop test. The five costly drugs, amber, clove, costus, cinnamon heartwood and cinnabar, are powdered and stirred in off the heat so they are not destroyed. **The plaster is built on 黃丹, lead tetroxide (Pb3O4), at 1 geun to 1 geun of oil — by weight the plaster is mostly lead compound, which is what a 膏藥 of this period essentially is. Lead is absorbed through broken skin, the route that matters for an ointment laid on an open sore, and it accumulates in bone and soft tissue with no safe dose. It also contains 朱砂, cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide. This must not be prepared or used.** The leaf gives no indication, which is itself informative: this section is about how to make things, and the plaster's uses were assumed known. As a dressing it would have occluded and protected; the amber and aromatics contribute nothing that can be demonstrated. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
