Ten Aromatics Plaster

Siphyang-go

한글 십향고  ·  Pinyin Shi Xiang Gao

十香膏

The collation note at the foot of leaf 050b, pairing the transcription's 求 with the First Edition's 水, annotates 滴求中成珠 in this leaf, two lines above the note's own position, and not the neighbouring 琥珀膏 leaf it sits inside; the transcription's 求 is printed and the First Edition reads 水, which gives the standard phrase 滴水中成珠, a drop into water forms a bead. No quantity is given for 黃丹, which in the parallel plasters of this section is taken at about the weight of the oil.

Translation

Aloeswood, clove, sandalwood, nardostachys and turmeric 5 don each, cut up coarse and steeped in 1 geun of sesame oil for seven days; then put into a pan and kept over a slow fire for five days, after which it is boiled over a fire alternately gentle and fierce for twenty or thirty bubblings. Strain off the dregs through cotton, wipe the pan, and set the rendered oil down; put in the lead tetroxide and stir without letting the hand rest, using a willow spatula, until the colour turns black and a drop into water forms a bead. Then put in frankincense, costus, storax resin, dragon's tooth and powdered storax oil 5 don each, and 2 don 5 fun of powdered musk; stir evenly three to five hundred strokes, and when it sets, make it into cakes. When using it, spread it on red silk and lay it on. — Seonghye 聖惠 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the plaster-maker's standard procedure set out in full: a long cold steep of aromatics in sesame oil, a slow render, a strain, then lead tetroxide stirred into the hot oil until the mass blackens and passes the drop test — a bead in cold water means the saponification has gone far enough to set. The costly volatiles, frankincense, musk and storax, go in after the heat so they survive. The product is a firm cake cut and spread on silk. **The base of this plaster is 黃丹, lead tetroxide (Pb3O4), and the plaster is in substance a lead soap — that is what a 膏藥 of this period essentially is. Lead is absorbed through broken skin, which is exactly the route that matters for an ointment laid on an open sore, and it is cumulative in bone and soft tissue with no safe dose. This must not be prepared or used.** Musk is from a CITES-listed animal and is not legally obtainable. Set against the lead, the ten aromatics are decoration. What such a plaster did well was occlude and protect a wound and hold it moist, and that is all that can be credited to it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
