Translation

Treats sparrow eye. Clamshell powder and yellow beeswax in equal parts; melt the wax to take up the powder and make pills the size of a jujube. Take a slice of pig's liver of about 2 nyang, split it open and wrap one pill inside, tie it with hemp thread, and boil it in a bowl of water until done; take it out and let the steam play on the eye while it is hot, and when it has cooled to warm, eat the liver. Continue until cured. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The method is the medicine. A waxed pill is sealed inside a slice of pig's liver, boiled, the steam held to the eye, and the liver then eaten — and the liver is the part that works, since night blindness is vitamin A deficiency and liver is the richest source of it. One of the few formulas in this chapter whose effect is not in doubt. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
