Calcitum Powder

Hansuseok-san

한글 한수석산  ·  Pinyin Han Shui Shi San

寒水石散

The leaf names no dose for the child, only the amount of powder per dose and the temperature of the water it is stirred into. The first of the ten leaves of 1.41.14, and the only one in the batch that adjusts administration to the season rather than to the patient.

Powder the above; for each dose 1 don, taken in cold water in the hot months and in warm water in the cold months. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two cooling minerals and licorice, ground and stirred into water. Calcitum and talc are both bland, heavy and insoluble; they pass through the gut largely unabsorbed and their effect in this tradition is read as drawing heat downward and out through the urine, which is why the indication pairs 去心熱 with 利小腸. On the fever itself, the honest reading is the one that governs this whole block. Most fevers in a child are caused by viruses and resolve on their own, and nothing in a cooling powder shortens them. An antipyretic treats the child's discomfort and nothing else; in particular it does not prevent febrile seizures, which is the belief that drives most of the anxious dosing. What decides whether a febrile child is in trouble is how the child looks — alertness, feeding, breathing, colour, whether the child can be roused and consoled — and not the number on a thermometer. The framing note for the fourteen kinds of fever is carried by the chapter prose for 1.41; see it for the taxonomy, which classifies by pattern rather than cause. **Contains calcitum, a mineral taken internally by an infant, and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere — not here and not in any leaf of this chapter. The amount is stated per dose of powder, and an infant's kidneys clear poorly. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
