梨漿飮

治同上 points back to 甘露飮 and its 潮熱, the leaf immediately before this one. The transcription writes 秦芃 where the drug is 秦艽; the form is carried in the corpus alias table and is printed here as transcribed. 生地黃 一寸 is measured by length rather than weight, as is 生梨 一片 by count — neither is given grams.

Translation

Treats the same as above — tidal fever. Sweet wormwood, steeped overnight in a boy's urine and sun-dried, bupleurum, ginseng, scutellaria, peucedanum, gentiana macrophylla and licorice, 2 fun each; one slice of fresh pear, two mint leaves, and 1 chon of fresh rehmannia. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A light decoction rather than a mineral powder, and the first leaf in this block that reads like a prescription written for a particular child. 靑蒿 and 柴胡 for the fever that comes and goes, 人參 for the depletion that 虛熱 names, and a slice of pear and two mint leaves for a child who will not drink. 靑蒿 is the one drug in this batch with a demonstrated action: Artemisia annua is the plant from which artemisinin was isolated, and a 潮熱 in a malarial region was often malaria. The crude herb decocted in water delivers very little artemisinin, so this is a hit on the plant and not on the treatment. Most fevers in a child are viral and self-limiting, and nothing in this decoction shortens them; the signs that matter are how the child looks and breathes rather than the height of the temperature. See the chapter prose at 1.41 for the frame. **The sweet wormwood is processed by steeping it overnight in the urine of a young boy. That is a human material, it carries the donor's infections, and the patient is an infant. The text gives no dose by weight anywhere. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
