Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治脾濕太過, 腫脹喘急. 黑丑(頭末) 一兩半(一半炒一半生), 白朮一兩, 甘遂五錢, 海金沙三錢. 右爲末, 每二錢, 煎倒流水一盞, 食前調下. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats spleen damp in excess, with swelling distension and hasty panting. Black morning glory seed (first milling only) 1.5 nyang, half stir-fried and half raw; white atractylodes 1 nyang; kansui 5 don; lygodium spores 3 don. Powder them and take 2 don at a time, stirred into a jan of decocted counter-flowing water, before meals. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most forceful of the general prescriptions, and the only one with white atractylodes in it — a nyang of spleen supplement holding the line against a nyang and a half of morning glory seed and five don of kansui. Splitting the morning glory seed half raw and half fried is deliberate: the raw half acts fast and the fried half slowly. Counter-flowing water as the vehicle belongs to the same order of thinking as the loofah at 2.5.14 — water that turns back on itself is chosen to make water in the body turn back and leave. **Contains kansui and morning glory seed, both toxic drastic purgatives.
