Resolve Toxin Pill

Haedok-hwan

한글 해독환  ·  Pinyin Jie Du Wan

解毒丸

The Donguibogam has two formulas named 解毒丸 and they are different prescriptions. The one already registered as haedok-hwan is the 宣明論's 大黃ㆍ黃芩ㆍ黃連ㆍ梔子ㆍ滑石ㆍ黑丑 for 一切熱毒; this leaf is the 三因's 板藍根ㆍ貫衆ㆍ靑黛ㆍ甘草 for food poisoning. This one therefore takes a tail, and the section tail -jungdok is used in place of the chapter tail, since 解毒丸-haedok repeats the formula's own name. The transcription writes 并 for 幷; the corpus's form is printed and 幷 is not further normalized. The 2.9 prose line above this leaf cites the pill as the chapter's downward treatment, 下以解毒丸靛漿利之.

Donguibogam

Translation

Treats poisoning from food and drink, and the toxin of the hundred substances, and saves a patient who must otherwise die. Woad root 4 nyang; flowering fern rhizome (the hairs removed), natural indigo and licorice, 1 nyang each. Powder them and make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, coated with more natural indigo. As soon as the spirit feels a little clouded and adrift, this is poisoning by one of the toxins; urgently take fifteen pills, chew them to a pulp and send them down with fresh water, and it is resolved. — Samin 三因 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs and three of them are the 三因's cooling toxin-resolvers: 板藍根, woad root, 貫衆, flowering fern rhizome, and 靑黛, the indigo pigment, with licorice to bind the claim together. The indigo is used twice — in the pill and again as its coating — which is partly colour and partly the book's conviction that indigo meets poison. 稍覺精神恍惚, 是中諸毒 is the leaf's diagnostic rule, and it is a reasonable observation: altered consciousness after a meal is one of the ways an ingested poison first shows. The response — fifteen pills chewed to a pulp and washed down — is what the chapter can offer in place of knowing what the poison was. None of these drugs is an antidote to anything specific, and 救人於必死, saving a patient who must otherwise die, is a claim the composition cannot support. A suspected poisoning is an emergency: the substance, the amount and the time matter, and management means a poisons centre, supportive care, and activated charcoal or a specific antidote where one applies. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
